I’ve spent a little time with a Windows Phone the past month or so, the Microsoft Lumia 550 to be exact. It’s not the best of phones, or specs. It runs Windows 10 which is nice to see, they have worked out most of the kinks and have the OS running smooth on 1GB of RAM, and a Qualcomm MSM8909 Snapdragon 210, which isn’t to bad to be honest. Android running them specs would be sluggish if it wasn’t stock android.
In regards to the camera etc, its pretty decent with a 5MP camera as the primary, and 2MP camera as secondary. They take, somewhat OK photos and would work well for someone who wants to just share a couple of photos on social networks.
The thing that is really annoying when switching from Android or iOS, is the apps. Don’t get me wrong, the app store with windows is just ok. It has most apps people would use every day. Social networking apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc, however there is still a lot missing. One being Snapchat.
Now when it comes to Snapchat not being there, yes I know, who needs Snapchat right? But I moved away from iOS to this, and it doesn’t compare at all. iOS runs so much smoother than windows or android, it’s a fact. I’ve had extensive use of every OS, and iOS wins hands down. The ease of use, smoothness, app store ecosystem, blows windows store apps out of the water.
Windows phones are fine, but they need more apps, they need developers to get on board or they need to outreach these companies to get them on board. They are cheap and cheerful devices and work well for browsing social networks, checking email and basic phone functions, but the app store for it still needs a lot of work and more apps added. The OS itself, runs smoothly and that is about it really. Cheap, cheerful, will work fine for small tasks and that is it.
Hey Microsoft, if you are reading, I will happly take any Windows based phones to review and chat about, maybe even make the switch -wink -wink -nudge -nudge.
