Sony Vegas mp4/mov fix.

For people that use Sony Vegas 8 or less for editing, and you cant edit you mp4 or mov files heres the fix or way around it without having to convert it.

Do not update to Quicktime 7.6.4, stay with 7.6.2. For Sony Vegas users, it was causing problems with mp4 and mov files, i dont know why this is im just here to tell you not to do it.

Another problem people are having that i have seen, is that they are complaining when they drag a .mov clip from their camera into vegas, it shows the video but no audio, or the audio is just dead on the time line.

To fix this, just change the extension of .mov to .mp4 then drag it in., it should then work with audio. If by some chance it doesnt then heres what to do next.

Last choice would be to convert it with a program called MediaCoder, or you can get quicktime pro so you can export the mov or mp4 file. When you are exporting in quicktime, make sure you select MP4 – and Passthrough.

What this does is that it wraps the .mov file in .mp4 container, so vegas picks up the audio. If your video is then laggy, then you can google that or i will write up a tutorial on a fix for you.

If you have any problems at all in getting this fix to work, then let me know by dropping a comment.

I can import .mov files into my Sony Vegas 8 Movie Studio and when once i saved it now I can’t open it. It starts loading and says “Error an expection has occured”. I’ve done all the stuff u listed and it still won’t work. I’d hate to have to start over, and I need to turn it in soon. Please help.

  • I see. Well make sure you have the right codec to play that .mov file, also trying playing it with vlc and tell me if that works.

vlc? what is that? I feel stupid for not knwing. But i still need to render the project file and finish editing, but i can’t open it. which codec do i need?

Okay, I cannot put the .mov file into the Sony Vegas 7.0 it just shows this error “Error Exception Has Occured” and when I look for more details it says something about quicktime. Once I deleted quicktime it said I needed the plug-in now.

    • Use Quicktime 7.6.4, if that doesnt work try 7.6.0, and then if that doesnt work, change your .mov extension to .mp4 then try to drag it in.

If all fails look for mediacoder on google, download and install and convert your .mov files to mp4.

If your still having problems, let me know.

Here’s a solution from Sony that worked for me. When dragging mp4’s to the timeline in Sony Vegas 8 and 9, the video would show, the audio would not. The video extensions were already mp4 (not .mov) straight off my camera so renaming was pointless. This simple file swap worked for me in Vegas 8 and 9…

    • Thanks for that Troy, im sure it will come in handy for someone searching the net. Although that problem might exist with the quicktime and iTunes error, some people just dont have the proper audio codec to play the audio. There is another way of doing this with quicktime pro, to get the audio working, but this way is easier, if anyone else has problems with playing audio in vegas i will put up a tutorial on how to fix that also.

hi, i am using sony vegas 7.0 and i have the same problem. is it necessary for me to install quicktime player for me to drag mp4 video to sony vegas? or if i install klcodec and sony vegas will recognize mp4 file? thanks

    • Yes. Try to install Quicktime 7.6.4 or 7.6.0 and drag your mp4 file in. If you need to find the specific codec download a program called GSpot then google the codec name.

What is happening with your mp4 files? No audio or no video?

vegas can’t recognize the file. ok. i will try installing quicktime. thanks for your help
